In 1932, America faced an economic crisis even more severe than the one it has been experiencing recently. The issue then, as now, was how to address it. When President Franklin Roosevelt came into office, he faced more economic problems than any president since has ever faced, but he came equipped with unique and creative solutions to them. One of his most important programs was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which recruited and employed more than two million young men in the prime of life and put them to work in the much threatened forests and farms around the nation. He gave these young men jobs, something they could be proud of doing, and offered them a level of education many had been denied. The CCC also taught them discipline and teamwork, skills that easily translated into workplace success. In less than eight years, the CCC planted billions of trees, built thousands of cabins and other rustic buildings, cleared thousands of acres of land, and created thousands of miles of walking and hiking trails. In the process, it shaped the lives of millions of young men, many of whom were dangerously close to embracing a life of crime.

While far too many of the Charles River Editor's publications are rife with grammatical errors, this one was nearly flawless. The information was not an in-depth study of the CCC by any means. In a publication of so few pages, however, one wouldn't expect it to be. Never-the-less, it was interesting. My father was expelled from the Iron Mountain School for Boys in Konnarack, VA, at the age of 16 back in early 1941. He walked and hitch-hiked the 50 miles to Wytheville, VA, to join the CCC camp there. He was only 16 and lied about his age to get accepted. His crew worked on building fire towers and trails in newly established Smokey Mountain National Park. It was interesting reading about the far-reaching conservation programs carried out by the CCC all over the country.

Included in this booklet were interviews with past members of the CCC, excepts from FDR's speeches, and information about the segregation of blacks and whites. It was amazing and interesting to learn how many people had worked for the CCC at one time or another, and also the opposition to it by a great many people. The dissolution of the CCC came about because of our entry into WWII. Many of the recruits were re-routed to the armed forces.

This was an extremely quick read, taking only a little over an hour, but it had some information I had not been previously aware of.

The Civilian Conservation Corps The History of the New Deal Famous Jobs Program During the Great Depression (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Dan Gallagher Books Reviews

Interesting overview of the CCC and provides an illustration of how service in the CCC not only benefited the participants, the localities where the
work was done, but how the participants were much better prepared to join the armed forces during WWII.
Wonderful review of the history of the CCC. As the son of a CCC enrollee, my father often spoke with pride of the influence the Corps instilled in him and how the Corps prepared him and others on the eve of WWII. This book reminds me of the stories my father related to me. Thanks for the memories.
I would recommend this book to non hard-core CCC history buffs. I found it interesting to know what wage they earned.
Short overview of the CCC and the related history. Typical Charles River product.
Book was taken from a film.
I enjoyed reading about the Civilian Conservation Corps. The book is concise and brief; nevertheless, it contains excerpts from several of Pres. Franklin Delano Roosevelts speeches about the Civilian Conservation Corps. Also the book contains comments from some of the participants of the program. I agree with the premise behind the program that able-bodied people would rather work for pay then being given a handout. I knew that soil erosion was a problem back in the 1930s but I did not realize that the Civilian Conservation Corps primary job function was conservation and that the United States had done such a bad job, as a whole about conservation. The book doesn't discuss much about the opposition to the program or the leaders of the opposition to the program. It was interesting to note that the majority of Americans during that time hardly left their states to visit relatives or vacation, and didn't really know much about people from other cultures or states. I recommend reading this book because it discusses the time and history that most Americans have little or no concept of.
If you treasure government parks, forests and preserves (and who doesn't?), you need to see this to appreciate how massive and important this program was. I wish it would be done again to revitalize these and newer lands in the public domain. New generations need to understand what effects the Civilian Conservation Corps had on our nation and the value of good conservation practices. I grew up enjoying the parks and forests in my home state that were created by the CCC without realizing the vast number of properties nationwide that were created or improved. The number of participants in the Corps and the vast combined land and facilities staggered me. It provided jobs, helped revitalize our weak economy and prepared millions of trained men for service in World War II.
